Under the organ loft in the Church of Oscar

The logical picture to show today would be one of the organ in the church. But instead I will upload a HDR with a view from under the organ loft. Compared with other church organs the one in the Church of Oscar is not the most eye-catching. But the fact that the Church of Oscar is well-known for its music shows that without a doubt that the organ sounds great. It’s original built by Marcussen & Søn in Aabenraa, Denmark, in 1949 and have 78 organ stops. However IMO the most beautiful features of this church are the vault, arches and the stained glass windows. From the two HDR I upload today you’ll get a whole impression of this church.

The pipe organ in the Engelbrekt church

On today’s picture from the Church of Engelbrekt you can see the church’s pipe organ. The organ, which is built by Grönlunds Orgelbyggeri in 1964, is one of largest of its kind in Sweden with 86 organ stops. But its predecessor, built by Åkerman & Lunds Orgelbyggeri, was even bigger. It was consecrated in 1929 and had 95 organ stops but was later gradually extended to 101 stops. This made the organ in the Engelbrekt church, together with the organ in Lund’s Cathedral, the largest pipe organ in Sweden. But the extensions also brought a lot of errors to the organ which prevented the organist to use his instrument to its full capacity. Therefore it was decided to replace the organ and the contract went to Grönlunds Orgelbyggeri. The present organ is the third in the church’s history. The first one was built by Setterquist & Son and had 40 organ stops.

Another impressive record that the Church of Engelbrekt still have is the hight of its vault. With a hight of 32 meters it’s the highest in Scandinavia.

The cupola of the Church of Hedvig Eleonora

Before we move on to the next church tomorrow let’s have the look at the cupola of the church. It’s not only gives the church a beautiful exterior look. It also brings very beautiful light into the church. The cupola is very sparse decorated on the inside only a golden sun in the middle. At the bottom of the cupola there is quotes from the bible in every four directions. Simple but very beautiful IMO! Tomorrow we another interesting church at Östermalm, the Church of Engelbrekt.

The pipe organ in the Church of Hedvig Eleonora

Today we look at some more beautiful inventories in the Church of Hedvig Eleonora. The present pipe organ is the 6th in the church’s history. It’s built by Grönlunds Orgelbyggeri, delivered 1976, and has 58 organ stops. However 20 of those organ stops are remains from three of the organ’s predecessors. The facade of the organ remains as it was originally built after Carl Fredrik Adelcrantz’s design in 1762. To the left you can see the baptismal chapel with the stained glass window called “Andreaskorst”, “The Andrew Cross”, made by Bengt Olof Kälde 1936.

The new organ in the Curch of Catherine

The present organ is the Church of Catherine´s third. Its predecessor, manufactured at Åkerman & Lund Orgelbyggeri AB in 1863, was destroyed in the fire 1990. 1993 a new organ was ordered from J. L. van den Heuvel Orgelbouw in Holland. Seven years later this organ, with 62 organ stops, were installed on the rebuilt organ loft. The Gren & Stråhles designed facade of the original organ loft was restored after the fire however it was slightly simplified from its original look.
